Vice President

Environmental Affairs

To some people, 20 years is a long time. But to C.R. Herro, it’s just the beginning. For two decades, he has been a corporate leader in environmental advances, land, and public relations for national and multinational construction businesses. As Vice President of Environmental Affairs for Meritage Homes, he’s in charge of establishing new green standards across the entire homebuilding industry by setting the example here at Meritage, the ninth largest homebuilder in the United States.

C.R.’s passion for green began in school. He earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical and Life Science from Arizona State University, a Master’s in Environmental Policy from Governors State, and a Master’s in Environmental Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology. He also spearheaded research and program design for environmental pollution control, remediation, and business development throughout the U.S. His processes have established new methods in flue gas desulfurization, industrial process design, land redevelopment, and building design.

Here at Meritage, C.R. is tasked with evolving Meritage’s Energy Efficiency and Sustainability program, which focuses on establishing new energy-efficiency benchmarks for all production homebuilders. He led the establishment of the Meritage Green program, which combines contemporary design, energy efficiency, water management, and new technologies to build homes with superior components that provide better comfort and healthier air – not to mention, they cost less to own and operate. As a result, every home Meritage builds exceeds the current EPA and DOE Energy Star for Homes standard, which is validated by third-party building and energy scientists.

C.R. works diligently to develop legislation and regulatory compliance tools, having worked extensively with state and national industry associations. He was appointed to the Board of Directors for the Arizona Rock Products Association and Chairman of the Maricopa Mine Zoning Commission. He has also been a speaker at conferences for the EPA, NSSGA, IAAP, ARPA, Arizona State’s Department of Housing, and the ASU School of Construction.

So yes, C.R. is at the crux of making our homes better for the environment and for our customers. But more importantly, he helps drive improvement of the entire homebuilding industry.
