After living in their home in Cedar Park, Texas, near Austin for about five years, Michele and Steve Ewerz decided it was time to upgrade to a bigger, more modern home. With two young kids, they needed plenty of room and wanted to be in a neighborhood with amenities the whole family could enjoy. Plus, Michele needed office space to work from home and accommodate her side gig of making jewelry. The Ewerz family felt that the only way to get everything they wanted was to build a house from the ground up.

The family took their time to find the right homebuilder who could provide everything they were looking for. “My husband and I were shopping for homebuilders for a long time before we finally found Meritage Homes,” says Michele. They chose a Meritage community in Leander, Texas, which is only a short distance from their old house. The neighborhood is located right across the street from a pool and park, perfect to keep 8-year-old Genevieve and 6-year-old Bauer busy.

It was Michele and Steve’s first time having a house built, so they weren’t sure what to expect. But to their delight, the process was smooth and stress-free. “The salesperson and contractor were great throughout the entire build,” says Michele. “They answered any questions we had and kept us up to date.”

And because the couple was looking for design options that would reflect their style, they worked closely with a Meritage Design Consultant who, Michele says, was patient and helped them stay within their budget.

But what really attracted the Ewerz family to Meritage was the energy efficiency built into every home. Meritage homes have spray foam insulation; sealed and insulated ducts; a sealed and conditioned attic; and UV-blocking windows that all work together to create a more comfortable — and healthier — home. “In the hot Texas weather, our home stays cool,” says Michele. “We used to run fans in our old house, but we don’t have to in our Meritage home, even though it’s twice the size.”

Four years later, Michele and her family still love their Meritage home. Since the family eats at the kitchen island, Michele turned the dining room area into her office. She loves how bright and open it is and how much space it gives her to work and do what she loves. You can see the results of her jewelry making here.

Michele also loves that she was able to choose a bay window for their master bedroom and make their outside patio larger. One of her favorite features is having the laundry room upstairs with the bedrooms, which makes life a lot easier when it comes time to wash clothes.

Michele’s advice to anyone looking to build a Meritage home: “The staff makes the whole process easy. They walk you through all the steps, so there’s no getting overwhelmed.” Check out all the states and metro areas where Meritage builds here.
